A Visit to the home of Esko Aho, Finland's former Prime Minister

Esko and Kirsti Aho visited the Finnish Center at Saima Park in May 2001, where Esko addressed the attendees at Finnish Literature Day.  During the social hour after the program, Esko Aho invited his fellow Kannuslainen, Erkki Tornikoski of Fitchburg, MA, to stop by for a visit while vacationing in Kannus this summer.  Jim Daley took a photo at Saima Park of the Ahos with Sirkka Linna Höglund, my cousin, in front of the bas relief of Oskari Tokoi, created by Sirkka.  (Click on the Finnish Literature Day page of this web site to view the photo.)

Erkki and I dropped in at Esko and Kirsti Aho's home in Kannus.  I took that opportunity to present a framed copy of the photo to the Ahos.  Esko was very gracious and welcoming to us.  We were invited in for coffee, and enjoyed refreshments provided by Kirsti Aho at their home and chatted about their year in America while Esko was associated with Harvard University in Cambridge, Mass.  There were a lot of adjustments to be made by the Aho family where they moved their family of four children and their associated personal belongings from Finland to the US.  Everything was different, from the way to post office operates to the banks and the shops.  They enjoyed their stay in the Boston area, and look forward to visiting the area again.

Kävinme Suomen Entistä Pääministeriä Esko Ahoa Tapamassa

Kuin Esko ja Kirsti Aho kävivät Finnish Center at Saima Parkissa toukokuussa, Esko Aho oli kutsunut Kannuslaisen Erkki Tornikosken käymään vierailulla kuin hän viettää kesälomansa Kannuksessa.

Erkki ja minä kävimme Esko ja Kirsti Ahon kotona Kannuksessa.  Vein Jim Daleyn ottama valokuvan Ahoista ja Sirkka Linna Höglundista.  Kuva oli otettu Saiman Puistossa Sirkkan suunnitteleman Oskari Tokoin patsaan edessä.  Voitte klikkaa Finnish Literature Day sivuun jos haluatte nähdä kuvan.

Esko oli erittäin kohtelias ja ystävälinen ja pyysi meidät sisään kahville.  Kirsti tarjos meille virvokkeita ja keskustelin heidän amerikan elämästä sen vuoden kuin Eskolla oli Cambridge Massan Harvard Yliopistoon yhdistys.  Tämä Amerikassa asuminen oli poikkeus heidän elämässä kuin heille oli kaikki outoa, postin kuljetuksesta kaupan käyntiin. He nauttivat Bostonin aluella asumisesta ja toivovat että käyvät uudeleen täällä.
